Goat Gains: Building Communities One Doe at a Time

Empowering Communities: The Goat Bank Initiative

The Goat Bank Initiative is an impactful collaboration between Goreto Treks and World Wide Goat Project Nepal (WWGPN), dedicated to fostering sustainable development in Nepal’s rural communities. Since its inception, Goreto Treks has pledged a portion of its proceeds to support and empower rural women across the country.

Through this initiative, we provide female goats (Does) to women in villages, promoting economic resilience and self-sufficiency. The concept is simple yet transformative: each recipient receives a Doe and, within 18–24 months, returns a Doe to the program. This sustainable cycle ensures that the benefits extend beyond the initial recipients, as the returned Does are passed on to other women in need, gradually expanding the community’s goat herd. To date, over 50 families have directly benefited from this initiative, demonstrating its profound impact.

Building on this success, we have introduced a community-based hybrid buck-sharing program to address a critical issue in rural Nepal: livestock inbreeding. By providing high-quality hybrid bucks to various communities, we help diversify livestock genetics and reduce the risks associated with inbreeding. Already, more than six hybrid bucks have been distributed, with plans to expand through future Community Resource Sharing (CRS) initiatives.

At Goreto Treks, we are committed to creating lasting, positive change in Nepal’s rural landscape. Through innovative programs like the Goat Bank and buck-sharing initiative, we are improving individual livelihoods and strengthening entire communities for generations to come. Join us in making a difference—one goat at a time.

.
